Beach for Puppies in Yorktown Mall

A new pet store has emerged in Yorktown Mall, located in Lombard, IL. Beach for Puppies is owned by Zachary Holland, with his father, Steven Holland as the manager. These are the same people who also own Beach for Dogs in Wheaton and Naperville, IL.

Beach for Dogs is known for the dog training and boarding services. It was only a matter of time until they opened up another location but instead of offering training services, they are selling puppies in Yorktown Mall.

Upon word that another store would be opening and selling puppies in Lombard, CAPS immediately looked into the business.

During Beach for Puppies "soft opening," CAPS private investigators inquired where the puppies come from. At the time, Zachary Holland claimed he did not have the information and that the information of the dogs whereabouts were with his father. There was no information about the puppies in the store placed anywhere. This is already a violation of the Illinois Animal Welfare Act that states pet stores must disclose where their dogs come from.

It wasn't until weeks later after many Lombard residents sent e-mails to Yorktown Mall management that Beach for Puppies complied. A second visit from CAPS investigators obtained the information from Steven Holland that Beach for Puppies get their dogs from J.A.K.S Inc. a puppy broker in Iowa.

Despite the issue at hand of a store selling puppies for retail, one of their future programs is what is very disturbing.

On September 9th, CAPS investigators went into the store and inquired about a program they offered by "giving away free puppies." Our investigators approached Zachary Holland about this program where he explained that it would be a program in the future where customers are given a female dog from them to be bred and those puppies will be sold in their store. He explained that all financial aspects would be covered as well as including their training program. At the time of the investigation, Holland had no written contract with further details of this program (for example, how many times would this female be bred, where would the stud come from, etc.)

After filing a complaint with the Illinois Department Of Agriculture, they sent an inspector to the store regarding disclosing information and about their "free puppy" program.  Beach for Puppies complied to giving necessary information and then lied to the state inspector saying they had no intention of giving away free puppies.

CAPS reached out once again to Mark Ernst at the Illinois Department Of Agriculture about this program, to where his response was that because the store is licensed, it can practice whatever business model it chooses and that it is not under the state's jurisdiction of what the store does with giving away free puppies.

Now we have found out that the Illinois Department Of Agriculture has issued a “rescue” license to Beach For Puppies. Really? A pet shop that sells dogs from puppy mills deceiving the public and stating they are a rescue? We are still investigating and will post updates as we receive them.

If anyone has been sold a sick or dying dog from this place please visit our website and fill out a pet shop complaint form.

CAPS has been holding peaceful protests every month to educate the public about this store.  If you'd like to join our peaceful protests, please e-mail our Outreach Coordinator, Maya Domiano at amalia1994@aol.com.
